The days of ordering a server and "shipping it to the IT guy" are over. For decades, that model worked - data center equipment arrived, got racked, powered up, and ran. But as AI workloads push power densities beyond 40kW per rack and liquid cooling becomes essential rather than optional, the infrastructure underneath has had to fundamentally change.
The equipment itself works well. Liquid cooling technology is proven and reliable. The real challenge? The widening gap between what liquid cooling systems demand and what most data center teams are equipped to deliver. After deploying over 1GW of liquid cooling globally, we've seen firsthand what separates smooth implementations from costly mistakes, and it's rarely about the hardware.
The expertise gap manifests in predictable ways: installations that take twice as long as planned, systems that underperform their specifications, and operators uncertain who to call when issues arise. These aren't edge cases - they're becoming the norm as liquid cooling adoption accelerates faster than industry knowledge can keep pace.
Problems arise with a simple truth: most data center operators don't know what they don't know about liquid cooling. And when they don't know, they don't know what to ask. An alternative multi-feed architecture might be 20% more expensive. For a buyer comparing equipment costs, the choice seems straightforward.
But these architectures achieve redundancy differently. The simpler system may require purchasing a second complete unit as backup to match the reliability of the more complex design. Suddenly, the initially cheaper option requires double the equipment investment, making it significantly more expensive overall than the architecture that built redundancy into a single system.
In today’s liquid cooled environments, most data center operators lack the technical background to evaluate these architectural differences during procurement. They compare published specifications and unit prices, not realizing that fundamental engineering choices determine the true cost and reliability equation. By the time these differences become apparent - often during detailed system design or commissioning - procurement decisions are already locked in.
Given the complexity and gaps in knowledge, the choice of technology partner becomes critical. This isn't about brand preference. It's about finding organizations with the depth of experience to bridge the expertise gap between what liquid cooling demands and what most data center teams currently possess.
Manufacturers deeply experienced in liquid cooling bring more than products to the table. They bring the ability to sift through a customer's questions and identify the real requirements underneath. When a data center asks about redundancy, experienced partners can probe deeper: What's your actual fault tolerance requirement? What's your power architecture? What performance level do you need to maintain during a component failure? These aren't sales questions, they're engineering questions that determine whether the solution will work as intended.

Factory-level engineering means systems are rigorously tested, flushed, and sealed before they ever reach the data center floor, eliminating common field installation issues. Integrated solutions from a single manufacturer remove the finger-pointing that happens when pieced-together systems underperform. When problems arise, there's one call to make, not a debate about whether it's a cooling issue, a controls issue, or an integration issue.
Validation for this approach comes from demanding customers. When technology leaders like NVIDIA evaluate cooling partners for their most advanced platforms, they're not just checking specification sheets, they're evaluating architectural thinking and engineering rigor. Data centers benefit from that same scrutiny when they choose partners who've earned those validations.
Liquid cooling isn't a one-time installation - it's an ongoing operational commitment. The systems require monitoring, maintenance, and occasional intervention that goes well beyond traditional air-cooled infrastructure.
This is where the partnership model proves its value over transactional equipment purchases. Preventative maintenance programs catch issues before they become failures. Regular system checks ensure cooling performance doesn't degrade over time. Perhaps most importantly, working closely with experienced technicians helps data center teams develop their own liquid cooling expertise.
